Slugging has become a viral trend, and many people claim it is the secret to younger-looking skin.
Slugging is essentially using an occlusive ingredient as your last step in your routine which would be applied after using your regular moisturizer. A popular occlusive ingredient and one we would recommend is petrolatum jelly.
Slugging using an occlusive ingredient like petrolatum jelly is used to create a trap that seals in the moisture from your moisturizer, it is trapping and sealing in all your skincare products that have already been applied which could according to some expert advice, enhance the ingredients and products to work better yet we’d caution sticking to that. The one issue is if you slug and seal in active ingredient such as retinol, or any exfoliating acids which can cause irritation and redness because when you lock them in then you will double/triple the affects of those ingredients.
Mainly it will seal and trap in your moisturizer to help seal in more moisture for your skin and repair your skin barrier. We recommend petrolatum jelly because it is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog your pores, making it safe for oily/acne-prone skin.
Slugging is a great trend to try in the winter because it can really repair your skin barrier which is important as it can easily be damaged during winter and according to many who have tried this trend, it has helped their skin to achieve that glow look everyone is after.
We recommend that you do not slug with active ingredients such as your exfoliating ingredients and retinol, rather slug when using a moisturizer.
